Seaside

Only 47 km from Chiusdino one gets to Follonica, with its fine beaches sheltered by mile-long pine-groves. Continuing southwards along the coast road, one encounters a succession of enchanting views of the surrounding countyside, which is a blend of Mediterranean scrub, pine woods and rocky outcrops; one arrives finally at Punta Ala, situated at the tip of the point that encloses the bay of Follonica. Further south, towards Marina di Grosseto, one finds Castiglione della Pescaia. A well-known and fully equipped seaside resorr, surrounded by dense pine woods, it is also an important fishing port. The village is divided into two sections: a modern, lower section and a Medieval (Castiglione Castello), fortified part, crowded around a frowning Aragonese Fortress (Rocca) dating back to the 14th/15th century.
